1. LINE DRAWING BY ACTION

2. 2D READYMADES

2-Dimensional Readymades

Project Description:

Each student must find a visually interesting, compelling or beautiful 2D object already existing in the world and bring it into class.

The Rules:

  1. The 2D object must already exist in the world. Absolutely no additional mark-making or artistic additions can be made to the object. However, if necessary you can alter the form –such as turning it inside out, upside down, editing it to a particular section, etc…

  1. The 2D object cannot have the original purpose of being art. For example, a painting you found on the side of the road or at a flea market is unacceptable. On the flip side, if you wanted to us to view the unintentional beauty of the back of a painting –that is ok. (unfortunately, since I just used this as an example it is now unacceptable…sorry.)

  1. The object must be 2-dimensional. The surface of a basketball is not flat enough.

  1. The object must be taken out of its current function and placed in an art context, thus changing its function. The more creatively you can do this the better. Consider your audience.

Time Line:

Selected 2-D Readymades will be presented to the class on Monday March 16th

Ways to approach this project:

  • Consider everything.
  • Be open to surprises.
  • Let the object find you. Just be there.
  • Walk down the street and pretend you are an alien with absolutely no idea how everything functions. Imagine everything purposeless and just “see”them for the formal qualities.

  • Wander and drift.
  • Be a tourist to your own home or neighborhood.
  • Watch movies when you are not working.
  • If you get stuck, call a family member.
  • Have fun.
